Set up email on your own domain

SoftServer can run a full mail server on your VPS, so you send and receive email at your own domain (for example [email protected]).

Before you start

Your domain should already be added to the server and pointing at it. Good email deliverability also needs correct DNS records, which the panel guides you through.

Steps

  1. Open your server and go to the Mail section.
  2. Start the mail setup. The panel walks you through the DNS records your domain needs (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) and verifies them.
  3. Install the mail server. Postfix and Dovecot are configured for you.
  4. Enable email for your domain and create mailboxes.

Why DNS matters

Mail providers reject or spam-folder messages from servers without proper DNS. SoftServer generates the exact records to add at your DNS provider and checks them before you go live. See Improve email deliverability.

Reverse DNS

For best results, also set up reverse DNS (PTR) for your server's IP — request it from the panel.
